Privacy policy
StormPrep doesn't ask you to sign up or log in, and we don't sell your information. This page explains what data is used when you visit, including the cookies our advertising partner Google uses.
Effective October 14, 2026
Information stored on your device
To make the site easier to use, some information is saved in your own browser:
- The last ZIP code you entered and its approximate location, so the site can still help you when you're offline
- Which checklist items you've checked off
- Anything you type into the family emergency plan, such as names, phone numbers, meeting places and medications
- Copies of the site's pages, so they open without an internet connection
This information stays on your device. It is never sent to us. You can erase it at any time by clearing your browser's site data, using the Reset button on a checklist, or using Clear plan on the family plan page.
Information sent to weather services
When you check alerts, your browser contacts two outside services directly:
- Zippopotam.us receives the ZIP code you entered and returns its approximate location.
- The National Weather Service (api.weather.gov) receives that approximate latitude and longitude and returns the active alerts.
Like any website, these services receive your IP address and basic browser information as part of the request. Their own privacy policies apply. We don't receive or keep the ZIP codes you look up.
Website hosting
Our hosting provider, Netlify, may keep standard server logs, such as IP address, browser type, pages visited and the time of each visit, for security and to keep the site running. We use this information only in aggregate and do not use it to identify individual visitors.
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message. We use it only to reply to you, never add you to a mailing list, and delete messages when they're no longer needed.
Advertising and cookies
StormPrep is free because it shows ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to show ads and measure how they perform.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalized advertising from Google by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- You can opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices.
If you opt out, you'll still see ads, but they won't be based on your browsing. To learn more, read how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland
If you visit from these regions, you'll see a consent message from Google's certified consent management platform before any non-essential cookies are used. You can accept, reject or customize how your data is used for advertising. To change your choice later, use the Cookie settings link at the bottom of any page.
Visitors in US states with privacy laws
Some states, including California, give residents rights over personal information used for targeted advertising, such as the right to opt out. You can exercise these choices through Google Ads Settings above or by emailing us. We don't sell personal information for money.
Children
This site is meant for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the site uses data, for example by adding a new service, we'll update this page and the effective date above.
