Where to shelter in your home
Pick your type of home, switch between tornado and hurricane, and tap any room to see why it's safe or not. The colors show the safest places to go.

Every room
Tornado: go down, go in
Get to the lowest level, in the middle of the house, away from windows. A basement is best. Without one, use a small windowless room on the ground floor. Cover your head and neck with your arms, a mattress, or a helmet.
Hurricane: stay above the water
If officials order you to evacuate, leave. If you stay, shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor that won't flood. A basement can fill with water, and a closed attic can trap you if water rises.
